Circle of Blossoms

Circle of Blossoms photo by Dan Bourque

Cherry Blossoms surround the serene waters of Washington D.C.’s tidal basin as the Washington Monument looks on.

Details: The cherry trees in Washington D.C. bloom for only a couple weeks each year at the end of March and early April. I was lucky enough to catch them in early April just as the blossoms were beginning to drop. Despite clouds and rain earlier in the day, the skies opened into sunshine just before sunset, and the shadows of the clouds danced on the Washington Monument as seen here.

Academy Winter Blue

Academy Winter Blue - US Air Force Academy - photo by Dan Bourque

The morning sun shines under low clouds to light the U.S. Air Force Academy in the shadow of Pikes Peak.

Details: Springtime in the Rockies is full of contrasts. The evening before this picture was taken, this area got a couple inches of fresh snow, but in the morning, the sun and blue skies were out again, and Pikes Peak had a brand new coat of snow. While there are clouds on the mountains fairly often, it’s unusual to catch the sun shining under them.

Power on Display

Power on Display lightning photography by Dan Bourque

A magnificent lightning bolt lights up the night sky above Colorado Springs.

Details: few things are a more irresistible subject for photography for me than an active thunderstorm at night. This particular storm was amazing with flashes going off inside the storm every several seconds. Only a small fraction of the bolts exited the storm, so I was fortunate to be able to grab this shot. If you’re going to try this at home, remember basic lightning safety, especially if the storm is headed in your direction.

Rocket Reflection

Rocket Reflection photo by Dan Bourque

A Saturn rocket reflected in polished granite on a beautiful autumn day.

Details: The northern Alabama welcome center along the border with Tennessee is home to a series of war memorials and a Saturn 1B rocket to honor the state’s fallen as well as its contributions to the nation’s space program. I didn’t plan this shot, it more or less appeared as I was looking at the names on the granite wall of the Vietnam memorial. I didn’t even notice until I got home that three most visible names are “Moon,” “Young” and “Bright,” which for me tie together these two vastly different symbols of the 1960s and give cause for reflection.

Saturn V

Saturn V photo by Dan Bourque

A massive Saturn V rocket points longingly toward a deep blue sky.

Details: the Saturn V, the rocket that sent the astronauts to the moon, was the largest rocket ever launched, and it stands more than 300 feet tall. This image was taken at the Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, the only place in the world where you can see an upright Saturn V. I needed a very wide angle lens (11mm) to get the whole rocket in this shot, and I love the way the wide angle makes it seem to tower over everything like it does when you’re standing there.

San Diego Night Skyline

San Diego Night Skyline panorama by Dan BourqueDramatic clouds add drama to the beautiful view of the night time skyline of San Diego, California as seen from Coronado Island.

Details: Coronado Island, across the bay from San Diego, offers a spectacular view of downtown San Diego, especially at night. The colorful lights of the downtown skyscrapers are reflected in the gentle waves as are the blue and red lights and “41” of the aircraft carrier USS Midway.

Sunset Reflection at the Cabin

Sunset Reflection at the Cabin

A spectacular orange and pink sunset is reflected in the large windows of a cabin on Lake Cumberland.

Details:  I stayed at this cabin named “Look Out Lodge” set on the shores of Lake Cumberland in southern Kentucky, and on January 1st, the deck provided a perfect spot to watch this amazing sunset.  While taking pictures, I glanced over and saw how perfectly the sunset was being reflected in the cabin’s large south-facing windows, and this was the result.

Rays Behind the Cathedral

Rays Behind the Cathedral

Brilliant rays of the morning sun shine across the face of the National Cathedral.

Details:  I had to maneuver around the grounds of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. to get into the perfect position to capture the sun along the outline of the cathedral. It’s tough to aim a lens flare, but I love how the bright gold and green flare here lends a sublime quality to the photo.  Because of the bright sun shining straight into the lens, I captured this in HDR with three exposures to preserve all the detail in the shadow of the church. I “pushed” the HDR a little more than I normally do for this shot because I love the bold color and slightly surreal result it yielded.

Autumn Branches over the Cathedral

Autumn Branches over the Cathedral

The branches of a tree turned red by autumn frames a tower of the National Cathedral.

Details:  I love how the elements of the red autumn tree, blue sky, clouds and ornate tower come together in this photo taken on a nice October day in Washington, D.C.  This image was captured in HDR to preserve the shadow detail of the branches and church against the bright morning sky.

National Cathedral Autumn

National Cathedral Autumn

Red leaves of autumn frame the stone towers of the National Cathedral.

Details:  This image was taken on a fine October morning at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.  A wide-angle lens was used to capture the tall scene and results in the exaggerated angles of the church which helps accentuate the height of the structure.  This image was captured in HDR to preserve the detail in the shadow of the structure even though it was heavily back lit by the morning sun.

Passageways of Marble and Stone

Passageways of Marble and Stone

Marble floors reflect stone arches of a passageway at the National Cathedral.

Details:  I loved the series of archways along this passageway at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.  In the low light, the floor made for the perfect improvised tripod, and the designs in the marble floor complement the lines of the stonework well.

Cathedral Glass

Morning sun streams through stained glass under a canopy of elaborate stonework at the National Cathedral.

Details:  This image was captured at the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.  I like this image because of the way the stonework frames the glass and the colors blend from golden to purple throughout the image.

Undulating shapes and colors combine to weave your eye into this scene on the Las Vegas strip.

Details: this images was taken on a cool March night. The long exposure was perfect for capturing the color and detail of the scene and for capturing people in a surreal blur as they enjoyed a walk along Las Vegas Boulevard.
