Potomac Peace

Potomac Peace landscape photo by Dan Bourque

The sun sets behind a clearing storm over a peaceful and reflective Potomac River.

Details: The Potomac River, which divides Virginia from Maryland can be a very peaceful place even a few miles from downtown Washington, D.C. This image was captured from Piscataway Park, a National Park Service site on the Maryland side of the river. Conditions just an hour earlier were horrendous for photography with complete overcast and walls of rain, but this image is evidence that sticking it out through the bad weather sometimes (not always) yields the most spectacular results.

Pier on the Potomac

Pier on the Potomac landscape photo by Dan Bourque

Wispy evening clouds paint the skies above a calm Potomac River and the fishing pier at Piscataway Park.

Details: many things I love combined to get this image – water, sunset, and a National Park site. This pier, found in Piscataway Park (a National Park Service site in Maryland) is a popular fishing spot for locals, and the calmness of the water and big, open skies make it a great place for photographers as well. A storm had rained on me just an hour before, and photos seemed doubtful, but the skies began clearing just before sunset. Yet another chance to learn the lesson “just stick with it!”

Autumn on Bluecat Lake

Autumn on Bluecat Lake

An October morning brings the reflections of blue skies and early autumn colors in the hills of southern Tennessee.

Details: This is one of those unplanned photos that you just fall into sometimes. While visiting my family in Tennessee, my dad took me and my boys out fishing, and on the way to our lake, we passed this gem, and luckily I’d brought my good camera. The guys were patient enough to wait while I ran down to the shore of Bluecat Lake to get this shot. Just 15 minutes later, this scene disappeared as the winds picked up and erased the amazing reflection.

Cozy Evening at the Cabin

Cozy Evening at the Cabin

Lights of a cabin on Lake Cumberland glow bright and warm as darkness captures the last remnants of day.

Details:  This image was taken at the aptly named “Look Out Lodge” on Lake Cumberland in southern Kentucky where I stayed with my family for a week. I walked outside for something completely unrelated to photography, turned around, and immediately ran for my camera. I just love how the dark blue color of the sky and clouds made for a great silhouette of the cabin and its warm lights.

Ohio Sunrise

Ohio Sunrise

The rising sun turns the sky to orange as it peeks from gold-lined clouds.

Details:  This image wasn’t planned. I just happened to be transporting my camera in my backpack when this scene emerged from the darkness on a November day near Dayton, Ohio.  A telephoto lens brought the scene closer to the camera and allowed me to focus on the amazing, painting-like clouds being illuminated.

Serene Morning at the Millpond

Serene Morning at the Millpond

The suns first rays illuminate the peaceful reflections of a cypress in a small millpond in South Carolina.

Details: on a calm and cloudless April morning, this old millpond near Sumter, South Carolina was a perfect place to capture the warm orange rays of the sun as they pushed away the purple darkness. A lone cypress tree in the middle of the pond accentuates the perfect reflection.
